The Prologue - well now, this is where Chaucer introduces us to the motley band who are to be his travelling companions to Canterbury. He also tells of how the landlord of the Tabard Inn is so fascinated that he decides to accompany them, even offering a free meal to the teller of the best tale on their return to Southwark. We become acquainted with a raw shipman and refined merchant; watch the rivalry between miller and reeve; and can only wonder at the characters of a dark summoner and cynical clerk. And yet, it is one lady, that most intriguing Wife of Bath, who truly captivates and enchants us. So now the scene is really set . . . and off we go . . . travelling along the busy highway of that medieval phenomenon - The Becket Pilgimage. |
